Before you get too excited about the brand new year looming .. there are a few lovely things you can do before the end of 2016. I adore this time of year, I am a true Christmas tragic and the simple joys of this season will always be close to my heart. This doesn’t mean that life is easy, far from it. The reality is that the new year is actually a most welcome fresh start and something I am deeply craving! The simple rituals that you can work into your end of year celebrations are such a lovely way to mark the end of 2016 and prepare to welcome 2017.
♡ Clean up
Clear the clutter, donate old toys and clothes to charity, spring clean your office and your work space at home. The end of year is the perfect time to clean and create the space for new beginnings.
♡ Free write
Grab your journal or note book and spend at least 10 minutes a day for the rest of the year free writing. This is an amazing practice for cleansing the mind, discovering the deeply hidden things you may need to address before 2017, and to just empty your busy brain a little at this crazy time of year!
♡ Reflect on gratitude
“Everyday may not be good, but there is something good in every day.” A quote that can help you to turn things around on any given day, even the really awful ones! If you can find at least one thing in each day to be grateful for, you will be changed for the better. Making a list of the Top Ten Things you are grateful for in 2016 is a lovely way to reflect on the positives!
♡ Make a list
I love a list! The way you want to feel is a great place to start dreaming about a new year. Make a list of the 10 ways you want to feel on a regular basis in 2017. For example, do you want to feel: energised, joyful, calm, organised, peaceful, kind hearted, grateful, content, mindful, open, accepting, in flow, motivated, spiritual, cleansed.
♡ Give to charity
Make a donation before the end of the year to let the universe know that you are generous. The energy we put out into the world is the energy that comes back to us! There is nothing more powerful than a wave of generosity at this time of year, so many people need your help and every dollar makes a difference.
Clean out your inbox and then use Unroll.me to decide on which of your newsletters you can live without in 2017. A clean inbox is a beautiful thing!
♡ Check your social media
Now is the perfect time to assess your social media usage. Is there anything toxic or negative in your newsfeed that you may need to lovingly remove? It may be a person, a news source, a blog or a page that is sucking your energy and not in alignment with your values. As you remove someone or something, do so with love and light.
♡ Make something
DIY and crafting is not for everyone, creativity is a wonderful thing though. If you can make something before the end of the year you may find some gentle relief from the craziness around you! It may be a beautiful photo book, a cake or Christmas cookies, a homemade gift for someone special or even just a drawing or some quiet solo colouring in.
♡ Thank people
Instead of just sending Christmas cards, thank people for the role they have played in your life this year. Send a thank you email, or a Facebook message with a favourite photo from 2016, or post it on a friend’s timeline to inspire others to do the same. Giving thanks is the most beautiful practice for all involved and again it is the loveliest energy to put out into the world at this time of year!
♡ Be kind to yourself
Most importantly at this time of year, self love and self care. For those grieving, it can be heart breaking. For those struggling emotionally, it can be incredibly hard. Please remember that you are not alone, the world may have gone mad but you can distance yourself, go gently and focus on nourishing you.
Are there any other end of year rituals you practice?
