A Letter to my Son’s Kindergarten Teacher

Dear Mrs R,

It was a bit of a blur last year at school, hard to keep thoughts straight at times. Between the prep, testing, 4 page reports, prepared speeches, detentions, meetings to discuss behaviour, homework, concerts, reading logs .. I could go on and on. I find myself with the head space to finally put this all in some sort of perspective. For a 5 year old boy, all of this might seem a little over the top, it certainly does to his Mother now that I can reflect properly.

thankyou baby!

“Every 90 seconds a Mother dies in childbirth. Globally, 2.9 million babies don’t make it through their first month of life because they don’t have access to basic health care.”

I cannot really comprehend these facts. In our world, where we are surrounded by choice, luxury and the very best health care, how can you possibly comprehend this happening?

“In Nepal, the maternal and child mortality rate is amongst the world’s worst. Every 4 hours a Nepali woman dies due to preventable complications in pregnancy and childbirth. Every 2 hours a Nepali newborn dies.”

We can all help change these heart breaking statistics.

Reflections on 7 Years of Motherhood

Portrait of mother and baby legs. First steps.

Hold them while you can.

Forgive yourself, and let go of that inner voice trying to chip away at your parenting mojo. It can be relentless, as can the outside voices trying to pull you in different directions.

My little person with the huge heart and spirit is 7 this week. Yes, yes I know .. time flies and all that. I have actually never uttered those words, and I find that they can suck the joy out of your days. Please don’t let them add to the already fleeting nature of raising small children.
