Blogging has changed my life, in more ways than I could have possibly imagined. The same energy that you put into the online world is what will come back to you, and thus far I have strived (and always will) to put out as much goodness, authenticity and light as possible. It is not about sugar coating, applying a filter to the less than perfect or hiding behind a screen. It is about letting our own lessons, our own carefully ‘curated’ moments out into the universe. It is about creativity, passion and utilising technology to make your mark.
I have crossed cyber paths with some of the most amazing humans out here in the blogosphere .. creative, kind, humble, extraordinary humans. Emma Kate is one of those lovely lights who blazes her own trail, leaving her own unique beauty everywhere she travels and takes her dreamy photos! Social media really is a magical outlet for connecting, making new friends, sharing and expressing! Emma Kate responded promptly and generously to my Inspired By series request, and I hope that you enjoy getting to know her a little better.
Where in the world do you call home?
Right now, I call Adelaide, South Australia my home. I grew up here and very recently returned for a ‘hiatus’, sunshine soaking pitstop from two years of perpetual travelling and living overseas.
Describe your home and neighbourhood:
Adelaide is a small city, nestled between rolling hills, vineyards and sprawling coastline. We have a brilliant food scene and amazing coffee. March is festival + fringe season, and we have outdoor parkland bars dotted around the city with fairy lights strung in trees, acrobatic shows, street food vans, pink skied balmy nights and a dreamy atmosphere. I love Adelaide most during March.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words:
Dreamer. Traveller. Seeker.
What is the name of your blog | business | passion and what is its purpose?
Emma Kate Co. until recently has primarily been a design studio and freelance service, where I specialise in branding, ebook design, hand lettering and illustration commissions for clients. I’ve had the pleasure of working with coaches, bloggers, photographers, trailblazers, rule breakers and entrepreneurs around the world who invest in design, their brands and their dreams.
This year, I’m switching up gears a little (lot!) and shifting focus from being a service to a product focused brand. Behind the scenes I’m working on a stationery + travel + lifestyle collection, which will launch in just a few months!
I tell stories – with paint, pen, texture and script.
My purpose is to inspire sudden smiles. Compassion. Happy sighs. To make days around the planet. My purpose is to inspire adventure – wanderlust – living the life of one’s dreams, with unabashed heart + clarity + soul + grace.
If you could choose any celebrity to become the Ambassador for your brand who would you choose and why?
Emma Watson would be a pretty beautiful Ambassador for my brand!! I have huge respect for her passion and work in gender equality and women’s empowerment.
What do you think is the most important thing for us to teach the children of our generation?
That it’s entirely possible to live the life of your dreams. Show up – do the work (lots of work!) – be brave – devote – and dreams will manifest.
Which food and drink do you consider essential to your mental and physical wellbeing?
Goats cheese (or any cheese for that matter – preferably with wine!) and tea, lots of tea!
How do you take care of yourself amongst the busy demands of daily life?
I honestly haven’t figured out the idea of ‘balance’ very convincingly yet! I live and breathe design – my work spills into my life, my life spills into my work – the line between the two is fuzzy and I like it that way. My work is such an extension of myself, my freelance clients become friends, my laptop comes everywhere with me – and I’m in this industry because I want complete immersion.
Lately, I’ve been really feeling the need to protect my energy – which means saying NO to a lot of things that are not a priority, in order to carve space for the things that are. We can do anything, but not everything after all.
What has been your greatest lesson in life so far?
Ooh that’s a big question! I’d say that my greatest lesson has been themed around freedom – losing it, fighting for it, owning it, thriving with it.
For most of my teenage years I struggled with anorexia, and that would undoubtably be my biggest challenge in life so far. For six odd years I was addicted to living a life completely in shadow; living and breathing the complete antithesis of my own rules and ultimately, the very fight to reclaim my life.
Living a life that feels free – uninhibited, unbridled, open and abundant is what I value most.
What is your best advice for anyone else who has a dream to be extra-ordinary?
This awesome advice (currently stuck to my computer via a sticky note, thanks to Danielle La Porte!)
+ Say yes, then figure it out.
+ Life is on your side.
+ Everything is progress.
+ Know you are changing.
